Tampa museums add up fast. A family of four at the Glazer Children's Museum is over $90 at the door, and that's before parking downtown.
The good news is that almost every big museum in town has some way in for free or close to it. It's rarely a simple "free Tuesday," though. Most of the savings come from library passes, age cutoffs, and programs that a lot of parents have never heard of.
We checked every offer below on the museum's or program's own site in late September 2026. Several free days that still circulate online, including a free Thursday night at Glazer and a free first Saturday at the History Center, don't appear on those sites anymore, so we left them out.

Museums that are free every day
USF Contemporary Art Museum
This is the one truly free art museum in Tampa, and most families don't know it exists. It sits on the USF campus in north Tampa. The museum says its exhibitions and events are "free and open to all, unless noted."
Hours are Monday through Friday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday until 8 p.m., and Saturday 1 to 4 p.m. It's closed Sundays, university holidays, and between exhibitions. That last part matters. Check the CAM site before you drive, because a gap between shows means a locked door.
Contemporary art is hit or miss with little kids. School-age kids who like weird, big, or surprising things tend to do better than toddlers.
Tampa Firefighters Museum
The museum is in Tampa's 1911 fire station on Zack Street downtown. Touring the apparatus floor, with the old fire trucks, costs nothing. Donations are welcome. It's open Tuesday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., per the museum's own page.
Here's the catch for parents of little ones. The Downtown Safety District, the pretend-play area with a fire station, ambulance, and emergency room for ages 1 to 8, is not free. It's $15 per child ages 1 to 8 and runs by reservation, according to the Downtown Safety District page. Older and younger siblings get in free with a paying child.
If your kid just wants to see big red trucks, the free floor is plenty. If you have a preschooler who will want to climb into the ambulance, plan for the $15.
Free evenings and pay-what-you-want
Tampa Museum of Art: Art on the House
Every Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m., the Tampa Museum of Art switches to pay-as-you-will admission. You can pay nothing. The museum is open until 8 p.m. on Thursdays for this, according to its Plan Your Visit page.
It's also free every day for kids 6 and under and college students with ID. Regular adult admission is $25, so Thursday night is a big saving.
Pair it with Curtis Hixon Park next door. Kids can run around on the lawn and playground before or after, and the Riverwalk is right there.
A small tip. The museum opens early at 9 a.m. on the last Sunday of each month for Art on the Spectrum, a quieter hour for neurodivergent visitors. It's not free, but it's a good time to go if crowds are hard for your family.
Library passes: the best deal most families skip
The Hillsborough County Public Library Discovery Pass is how most local families get into the pricey museums free. You reserve online with your library card, pick a date within a 30-day window, and show the pass on your phone.
Passes are first come, first served. You get one pass per adult library card per museum per year. Most passes cover up to four people: two adults and two kids, or one adult and three kids.
As of late September 2026, the museums on the list include:
- Glazer Children's Museum (up to 4)
- Tampa Bay History Center (up to 4)
- Henry B. Plant Museum (up to 4)
- Florida Museum of Photographic Arts (up to 4)
- Tampa Museum of Art (up to 4)
- American Victory Ship and Museum (up to 4)
- Imagine Museum in St. Pete (up to 4)
- Florida Holocaust Museum in St. Pete (up to 5 from one household)
The Florida Aquarium pass works differently. You borrow it in person at six specific branches, use it within 7 days, and it covers up to six people. There are no holds.
Two adults in the house means two library cards. That's two passes per museum per year. For Glazer alone, that's worth close to $200.
Glazer says the same kind of pass exists in Pinellas, Pasco, and Polk County libraries and at the St. Pete Beach Library, so check your own county if you're not in Hillsborough. For free library events like storytimes, see our free library programs guide.
Free or cheap with an EBT card (Museums for All)
Museums for All is a national program for families receiving SNAP benefits. You show your EBT card and a photo ID. Each museum sets its own deal, and in Tampa they're good:
| Museum | EBT deal |
|---|---|
| Tampa Bay History Center | Free for cardholder plus 3 guests |
| Tampa Museum of Art | Free for SNAP EBT participants |
| Henry B. Plant Museum | Admits parties of up to 4 with a current EBT card |
| MOSI | $3 per person, up to 5 people |
| Glazer Children's Museum | Access Pass: $5 per person, up to 4, for Florida residents on SNAP, EBT, or WIC |
| Museum of Fine Arts, St. Pete | Free with SNAP EBT card |
Glazer's version is an annual pass. The cardholder has to apply in person at Guest Services with their benefits card and photo ID, and it's good for 12 months, per Glazer's Financial Access page. MOSI's deal covers standard exhibits only, not add-ons, per its special offers page.
Ages that get in free
If your kids are young, you may already be paying less than you think. These are the free ages as listed on each museum's site in September 2026:
- Glazer Children's Museum: under 1
- Tampa Bay History Center: 0 to 6 (visit page)
- Tampa Museum of Art: 6 and under
- Museum of Fine Arts, St. Pete: 6 and under (visit page)
- Florida Museum of Photographic Arts: under 8 (visit page)
- Henry B. Plant Museum: infants (visit page)
- Ybor City Museum State Park: 5 and under (Florida State Parks)
Deals for specific groups
Bank of America cardholders. Museums on Us gives free general admission to the cardholder only on the first full weekend of every month. The Tampa Museum of Art takes part, per its discounts page, and the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts lists it too. It doesn't cover the rest of your group. At TMA that's fine if your kids are 6 or under, since they're free anyway.
Military families. Blue Star Museums gives active-duty families free admission from Armed Forces Day in May through Labor Day. The 2026 season has ended, so this is one to remember next summer. The History Center and FMoPA both participate. The History Center also offers discounted military and veteran tickets year-round.
Florida teachers. MOSI gives free admission to Florida K-12 teachers and school staff with proof of employment. That's the teacher only, but it helps on a family visit.
What we left out
A few free museum days still show up on other lists, but we couldn't confirm them on official sites in September 2026:
- A free Thursday evening at Glazer Children's Museum
- Free first Saturdays at the Tampa Bay History Center
- Free Friday evenings at the Tampa Museum of Art (the free-ish night is Thursday)
- MOSI community free days
If one of these comes back, we'll add it. For the full rundown of kid-friendly museums, including the paid ones, see our Tampa museums for kids guide. For more free days out, try the free things to do in Tampa list and our rainy day activities guide.
