The Tampa Firefighters Museum is one of those downtown places most parents drive past for years without going in. It's in the old 1911 fire station on Zack Street, and it's small. For a preschooler who loves fire trucks, though, it's one of the best hours you can spend in Tampa.
Here's what to know before you go. We confirmed the details on the museum's website in late September 2026.
The basics
| Address | 720 E. Zack St, Tampa 33602 |
| Museum hours | TuesdayโFriday, 10 a.m.โ2 p.m. |
| Fire truck floor | Free (donations welcome) |

It's closed on weekends, which catches a lot of families off guard. It works best as a weekday outing for toddlers and preschoolers.
What kids will see
The building is part of the exhibit. It was Tampa's downtown fire station and fire department headquarters until 1978. It was also the last Tampa station built with horse-drawn equipment in mind, and you can still see scars in the floor from the horses and steam engines.
On the apparatus floor you'll find antique fire trucks, old alarm boxes, and a big communications board. The firefighters' poles are still there too. For a kid who has only seen modern trucks, the old engines are the highlight. There's also a quiet 9/11 memorial sculpture honoring the 343 New York firefighters who died that day. If your kids are old enough to ask about it, it may start a conversation.
The Downtown Safety District
This is the main reason to bring little kids. The museum opened its new children's play area in March 2026. It's a hands-on pretend town built for ages 1 to 8, with a downtown Tampa streetscape, a fire station, an emergency room, an ambulance, a playhouse, and a cafรฉ. Kids get to be the firefighter, the paramedic, or the doctor.
A few rules:
- Sessions are 90 minutes and capped at 12 children.
- Reserve a spot to be guaranteed entry. Walk-ins can pay at the door if there's space.
- Siblings older or younger than 1 to 8 get in free with a paying child. Older kids need to play calmly.
- Parents stay in the room. It's not a drop-off space.
- There's no food or drink in the play area. There is a restroom with a changing station.
Story time with a real firefighter
On the third Monday of each month, a firefighter in full gear reads fire safety stories. After that there's a short play session and coloring. It lasts about an hour, space is limited, and you reserve through the museum's Downtown Safety District page.
This is a good way to get a nervous toddler used to seeing a firefighter in turnout gear, which helps if they ever need to see one for real.
Field trips, fire station tours, and parties
Field trips and groups: Email the museum's education director at education@tampafirefightersmuseum.org.
Tours of the working fire station across the street: The museum doesn't schedule these. Call Tampa Fire Rescue's public education coordinator at 813-274-7002.
Birthday parties: $500 for two hours of exclusive use, covering up to 10 children with a maximum of 16. Each child gets a goody bag, and sales tax is extra. It's aimed at ages 1 to 8. For more party ideas, see our Tampa birthday party ideas guide.
Make it a morning downtown
The museum is less than a mile from the Tampa Riverwalk and the Glazer Children's Museum. That's a fine walk with a stroller, or a quick drive. A 10 a.m. play session plus some time by the river fills a morning without wearing out a 3-year-old. See our Tampa Riverwalk family guide and our full list of Tampa museums for kids.
